Practicum Student

Tanya Makela (she/them) is currently completing her Master of Psychology (MPsy) in Clinical Psychology at the Adler Graduate School and is a Registered Behaviour Analyst in Ontario. Her clinical research focuses on adapting interventions for neurodivergent adolescents and young adults who experience significant emotion dysregulation and engage in life-interfering behaviours, with an emphasis on developmental trauma, emotional awareness, behavioural challenges, and neurodevelopmental diagnoses. Drawing on extensive experience supporting neurodiverse and dually diagnosed individuals and their families, her clinical practice centres on providing compassionate, comprehensive assessments and evidence-based treatment tailored to each client’s unique needs.
Tanya has training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT; DBT-A), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness-based approaches. She integrates these modalities within a culturally responsive, compassionate, and client-centred framework. Dedicated to working collaboratively, Tanya co-creates a supportive, creative space where clients can identify their goals, develop deeper self-understanding, and navigate concerns related to mood, executive functioning, relationships, and life transitions.
Prior to pursuing advanced clinical training in psychology, Tanya practiced as a behaviour analyst, college professor, and clinical researcher across clinic and community settings. This professional background deeply informs her practical, individualized, and neurodiversity-affirming approach to care.
Tanya provides clinical services in English.

Outside of clinical practice, she maintains balance and energy by spending time with family and friends, getting lost in a good book, dancing, and running.
