Trauma-Focused Therapy

At Broadview Psychology, we assess for and treat the effects of past and recent traumas using a variety of evidence-based approaches. Traumatic events include sexual and/or physical assault, childhood maltreatment, natural disasters, serious accidents, operational stress injuries (including military or service-related traumas) and other incidents involving actual, threatened, or witnessed harm. Some trauma survivors develop serious and distressing symptoms following a traumatic event, such as re-experiencing the event through flashbacks or nightmares, avoiding reminders of the trauma, intense emotions including sadness, anxiety, or guilt, self-blame, feeling constantly on edge, disruptions in attention, concentration, or sleep, and difficulties in close relationships. Often these concerns are more severe in individuals with histories of multiple traumas and/or a history of childhood trauma.

Trauma-focused therapeutic approaches specifically aim to reduce these distressing symptoms while helping clients to gain a greater understanding of their traumatic past. Cognitive, behavioural, and interpersonal interventions are utilized to increase safety and stabilization, while allowing clients to process traumatic experiences, reduce trauma-related symptoms, and make positive changes in their lives moving forward.
